Getting The Right Logs

Getting hold of access logs from clients and web administrators can be tricky. We’ve put together the following template to help you get the right logs first time ready to import in to the Log File Analyser.

Dear Client,

As part of our SEO activities I’d like to review the web server access logs for www.example.com. Theses logs will give an insight to what traffic your site is actually receiving. Unlike Analytics, this will also allow me to see search engine traffic which will provide some very useful information. Could you please send the following to the web administrator for www.example.com and forward the logs over to me?

Dear Web Administrator,

Could you please provide me with the access logs for www.example.com?

I require the raw access logs from all the web servers for this domain, with no filtering or modifications applied. If we could get hold of the last 3 months worth of logs that would be great. If the server sits behind any caching proxy that prevent it from serving all the requests then I would like those logs also.

Do the logs contain requests from more than a single domain and protocol? If so, is the domain and protocol included in this logs? If not, this will prevent us from correctly identify the requests. We won’t be able to tell the difference between a request for http://www.example.com/ and https://example.com/. If we could update the log configuration to include this information for the future that would be much appreciated.
