Structured Data: Validation Errors

back to issues overview

Validation Errors

URLs that contain structured data validation errors related to Schema.org.

Schema.org validation includes checks against whether the types and properties exist against main and pending Schema vocabulary and will show ‘errors’ for any issues encountered.

How to Analyse in the SEO Spider

View URLs with this issue in the ‘Structured Data’ tab and ‘Validation Errors’ filter, and export all URLs using the ‘Export’ button.

Structured data validation errors will only be discovered if JSON-LD, microdata and RDFa formats are selected for extraction and Schema.org validation is enabled via ‘Config > Spider > Extraction’.

View the number of validation errors for each URL in the ‘Errors’ column and details of the error using the lower ‘Structured Data Details’ tab.

The left-hand side of the lower window pane shows property values and icons against them when there are errors or warnings, and the right-hand window provides detail on the specific validation issues.

The right-hand side of the lower window pane will detail the exact validation type (Schema.org, or the relevant Google rich result feature), the severity (an error, warning or just info) and a message for the specific issue to fix.

Use the ‘Reports > Structured Data > Validation Errors & Warnings Summary’ report to view unique validation errors aggregated from across the website.

Bulk export all validation errors using the ‘Bulk Export > Structured Data > Validation Errors’ export. Read our tutorial on ‘How To Test & Validate Structured Data’.

What Triggers This Issue

This issue is triggered when URLs contain validation errors in their structured data for Schema.org.

This includes checks against whether the types and properties exist against Schema vocabulary.

For example, the Schema.org validation will check to see whether https://schema.org/author exists for a property, or https://schema.org/Book exists as a type.

How To Fix

Resolve validation errors to ensure pages have valid structured data and are eligible for special search result features in Google.

Review the ‘Structured Data Details’ tab for more information on specific errors and refer to Schema.org specifications where necessary.

Export unique validation errors using ‘Reports > Structured Data > Validation Errors & Warnings Summary’ and test in the Schema Markup Validator.
